The chart below depicts the percentage changes in six age ranges over an eight year period. It is important to note that the 60 to 64 and 65 to 69 age ranges are both comprised of persons who were born in 1929 through 1938, the Depression era. The Depression years had a reduced birth rate and that likely contributes to the reduction.
The age ranges of 60 to 64 and 65 to 69 are not increasing as fast as projected. The oldest of the older Kansans' population is growing much faster than projected. This is especially noted in the 85 plus age range. This age range saw nearly a 20 percent population increase between 1990 and 1998. In Kansas this age range covers over a 20 year span.
