Volunteer Update Certification
SHICK uses a review process to ensure that Volunteer Counselors are up-to-date on Medicare's ever-changing rules, regulations and guidelines.
The world of health insurance for seniors has become more complex than when SHICK began. New trends make many seniors vulnerable as insurance plans end, Medicare+Choice introduces unfamiliar options and concerns about future long-term care needs increase.
When you complete an Update Training, you will be awarded an Update Certificate. To continue as a certified SHICK volunteer counselor and receive your certificate:
- You must attend one SHICK Update Training per year. This training can be in your area, or if an alternate site is better for you, please let your Coordinator know the date and location of the Training you will be attending. (Call the State SHICK Office for alternate dates.) OR
- If you are unable to attend an Update Training, we will send you a packet containing the Update Pages for your SHICK Handbook and a Review Exercise. You must complete the Review Exercise and return the answer sheet to the State SHICK Office. Use your Handbook and the new pages to help with your answers.

Attention: Suzi Lenker

Wichita, KS 67202
If you are unable to complete the Review Exercise, we will put you on our Inactive Volunteer List until you contact us by attending the next Update Training. Your Coordinator will no longer make referrals to you.
You are encouraged to attend the Update Trainings, not only for the information that you will gain, but for the opportunity to meet and talk with other Volunteer Counselors who are helping Medicare beneficiaries. Often the best teachers are our peers who can help solve our problems through their experiences.
