Derby Senior Center Celebrates 30th Anniversary and National Accreditation

Topeka- The senior center in Derby is celebrating 30 years of providing services to seniors in the south Wichita suburb. Derby Senior Center has also gained the first National Accreditation of any senior center in Kansas.

“It is exciting and important that the Derby Senior Center is being recognized,” said Secretary Shawn Sullivan. “Congratulations to not only Derby Senior Center, but to the community of Derby for supporting such a great program for 30 years.”

The Derby Senior Center is specifically known for their senior programming. The center has become not only a gathering place for seniors during the day, but also offers many events and activities for seniors to participate in.

The National Council on Aging has developed rigorous standards they use when giving national accreditation. The accreditation is considered the official mark of excellence for senior centers. Accreditation is awarded based on community participation, diversity in senior programming at the center, and that the senior center is generally well-run.
