Officials from the Kansas Department on Aging will be in Haviland on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, to recognize Karel Page, administrator, and the staff of Lakewood Rehabilitation, formerly Friendship Manor Rehabilitation Center, Haviland, for their efforts in changing the culture of long-term care.
Lakewood Rehabilitation is one of 10 Kansas nursing homes to earn a 2005 award for Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas Nursing Homes (PEAK). This is the fourth year KDOA has presented PEAK awards to recognize homes that are moving away from institutional models of the past to person-centered care in a home-like environment.
The presentation is open to the public. On hand for the 1:30 p.m. awards ceremony will be Bill McDaniel, KDOA director of Nursing Facilities (NF) and Client Assessment, Referral and Evaluation (CARE) programs and Dave Halferty and Patsy Samson, senior managers in the KDOA NF/CARE Division.
Also receiving 2005 PEAK awards are: Arkansas City Presbyterian Manor; Golden Heights Living Center, Garnett; Hillsboro Community Medical Center, Hillsboro; Medicalodge of Kinsley; Medicalodge of Wichita; The Cedars, McPherson; Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan; Pleasant View Home Inc., Inman; and Schowalter Villa, Hesston.
Lakewood Rehabilitation is the only nursing facility for mental health (NFMH) to apply for and receive a 2005 PEAK award. The clientele it serves with severe and persistent mental illness are generally younger and more physically independent than the typical nursing home population. The home accomplishes its goal of helping each client be as independent as possible through education and development of life skills so they can return to the community. For example, Lakewood Rehabilitation’s vocational program allows clients to volunteer to assist local entities and be paid by the facility. A computer program and teacher provided by Haviland schools enables clients to learn computer skills and earn a high school diploma.
Sponsors of the PEAK Awards are Kansas Foundation
