Governor's Conference
CONFERENCE CANCELED

With incredible regret, I have decided to cancel the 2009 Governor's Conference on Aging. I have not reached this decision easily but have been moving in this direction for the past few weeks. We have begun notifying exhibitors and presenters of this decision.

Much about our work is in flux because of the economic crisis. The seniors are the constant in all of this. They are still there, still needing help and feeling the direct impact of the recession. At this critical moment, seniors need us to attend to their unique circumstances and needs.

I have been in contact with the Kansas Area Agencies on Aging Association (K4A) and AARP regarding our shared missions. Our three organizations will form a task team to identify the nature of the impact of the economic downturn on Kansas seniors. We intend to pull together key members of the aging services network, in the form of a daylong summit, to share resources, strategies and support. Thus, we will shift our focus from a conference to increased collaboration during this financial crisis.

I am proud of the Governor’s Conference on Aging Services and our staff. Last year our conference drew 850 participants. All year, I have received feedback about the quality of our programming. We hope to revive a full conference in the future. Until that time, we must re-tool our efforts. Our mission is “to promote the security, dignity and independence of Kansas seniors.” We will continue to do just that.

Most sincerely,
Secretary Greenlee
